ORIGIN & VARIETIES
Cannellini beans originated in Peru over 7000 years ago. Cannellini beans are related to kidney beans, and black beans, haricot, kidney, lima, mung, pinto and string beans are all members of the Phaseolus vulgaris variety. They were introduced into North America by native Americans and brought to Europe by early European explorers from the 15th century onwards.
Today, the largest producers of these dried common beans are India, China, Indonedia, Brazil and the US.
